Map Pins

Bart
We are tweaking the algorithm for displaying past users on maps. So don't worry if you see more pins, or less pins from time to time. Today we will probably have that worked out.

Maps on Digg, TechCrunch, and Cnet!

Christopher
Today has been a great day for our maps widget. First, Michael Arrington, of TechCrunch fame, gave the map a review that started a traffic surge. Adding to that, a review by Rafe Needleman at C|net Webware that ended up on the front page of C|net for a little while, and a ton of other bloggers who found our widget and either added it to their blogs or reviewed it, we really started to spread like wildfire. Then came the diggers! We ended up on the front page of Digg for more then 2 hours, bringing tons of traffic to the site. Throughout all of this (even with all our previous sites using our widgets, many who routinely have more then 2,000 people online simultaneously!) our servers never flinched once, see we told you we had made performance improvements ;)

Thanks to all who Dugg, reviewed, or started using our widgets!

Be on the lookout for a major new widget coming very shortly ;)

New Addition - Maps

Bart
We have been working hard this past month to bring you the newest addition to whos.amung.us.

You've probably seen maps on webpages before, but not like ours! Dare I say we are probably the first to bring LIVE map widgets? The map, which you embed on your page, pinpoints the current online users by a pulsating icon as well as past users who visited your site by a static point. There is no need to refresh the page to get an updated map, it simply adds new points to itself every few seconds. So you can see where people are 'land'ing from ;). Highly customizable, we are sure these maps will please you.

There is no need to sign up for maps, as they're already on your stats page. However if you wish to embed the map on your website, code is available so you can show all of your users.

On another note, we have yet again increased the performance of our servers to handle the potential growth of our service. Alongside of that, made minor cosmetic changes to the already existing graphs and website itself, in an effort to make it as easy and pleasant as possible for our users to browse.

Thanks for sticking with us, we strive to constantly bring you more fun and innovative web analytics.

Performance Enhancers & The Road Ahead

Tom
It's been exactly one month since we last reported various slow downs due to our increased usage. Definitely time for an update!

Not willing to become victims of our own success, the Amung.us team has invested countless hours, working to revamp and improve our service. While I could certainly go on about the new servers we've added, database migrations (dolphin -> elephant), custom tracking software etc... that'd only be of interest to about 8 people.

Instead I'll talk about what's important to you, our end users!
  • Faster page loads (no more delays).
  • Expedited graph generation.
  • Improved user experience loading our stats pages.
  • Higher accuracy tracking of users.

Now with our performance issues resolved, we can get back to what we enjoy doing most, creating new and innovative products. In fact within this month, we'll be rolling out various updates so please stay tuned!

Once again, thank you for your interest in our service! whos.amung.us is a continuously evolving project, and we're always open to suggestions.
