Performance Improvements & Map Pin Fix

Christopher
We've just released an update to our back end tracking software and it has made a HUGE improvement in speed and responsiveness of our site and the services we offer.

However, there is a slight bug with the maps, and we are working as fast as we can to resolve it. A very small number of users may have lost a few map pins in the conversion process (this is unfortunately permanent, although the service is free we make every attempt to maintain your visitor data), and active users may not show up 100% accurately for the next few hours while we fix this, so please bare with us.

Also since we've got our performance issues fixed we'll be bringing graphs back very soon!

Welcome candidates.amung.us!

Christopher
Everybody please welcome the latest member to the amung.us family, candidates! We've been hard at work the past while pulling it together and it has turned out to be a very cool app that should lead to some very interesting results. The best way to describe it is from our learn more page:

We provide a method for you to turn your website, blog or social networking profile into an endorsement for a 2008 U.S. Presidential Candidate. For years, established print-media publications, and large lobbyist groups have been the sole source of coveted endorsements made towards one candidate or another.

These endorsements are used as an important measure into the success of any political campaign, and we feel it's about time the concept is brought into the 21st century. If you maintain any sort of online publication, now you too can officially proclaim your support for your favored candidate, with a candidates.amung.us endorsement!

This also marks Amung.us's first foray into Facebook applications. We've made a Facebook application verison of candidates.amung.us that allows you to endorse any of the candidates on your profile. We hope this helps to encourage young people to vote this Novemeber and it will be interesting to see how the younger population on Facebook views the election.

Get out there and vote next November, but in the mean time show your support for a candidate now!

One final note, it will likely take a few days for the candidates widget to spread enough for the results to settle down, so the sooner you add the widget the sooner we can have consistent results.

We also *promise* to bring graphs back very soon, we've been doing some significant rewrites to our core statistic daemons that should increase performance several fold. On that same note we are working as fast as we can to get some new performance improvements implemented to keep the system faster and more reliable.

Map Data Loss

Christopher
While we were performing a system upgrade, we encountered a minor bug that, regrettably, caused a small amount of data loss to some user's maps.

Unfortunately we can not bring this data back but it should only have affected a small number of users, and in most cases on very busy sites where points are cleaned up quite often anyway.

If you were affected by this bug we apologize and have made some changes to ensure this doesn't happen again.

The graphs should be back online imminently as well, we've encountered some problems while changing the graphing system to perform better, but are working as fast as we can to get them back online.

On another note keep checking the site and this blog for a new very cool feature due to be released very soon ;)

Heatmaps

Christopher
We've been hard at work this last little while preparing a fresh addition to our phenomenally popular maps service: heatmaps.

Now all maps on the show pages, (whether you arrived by clicking a widget or an embedded map) have the ability to toggle a heatmap overlay, showing the intensity of your websites' global popularity at a glance. By clicking on the "Heatmap On" (or Off) text on the bottom left of the large map you can easily alternate between your regular map and heatmap.

We have also added the ability to embed small heatmaps in your website or blog, Get one now!

We thrive on good technical challenges, and take pride in creating new and innovative products. So we hope you'll enjoy the heatmaps as much as we've enjoyed creating them!
